Watch Michelle Obama Gush About Her New Kids’ Show and Its Campaign to Help Feed US Families

Season one of Michelle Obama's new kids' series, Waffles + Mochi, hit Netflix today, and in a conversation with Ellen DeGeneres, the former First Lady gushed about the sweet show and what it means to her to be a part of the project.

"It's really a fun food adventure show, and it's not just for kids, but it's one of these things that's funny for parents - a kind of programming where family can sit down [together]," Michelle told Ellen. "Waffles and Mochi escape from the Land of Frozen Food, where they've never seen real food, but they want to be chefs because they're addicted to Julia Childs. And they wind up in my grocery store - yes, I'm Mrs. O, I am the owner of a supermarket and I'm always up in the garden. Busy, the bee, is my assistant, [and] I hire these two characters to help out at the store . . . but they don't know anything about food. So they go off on an adventure every episode on their magical cart, where they go all over the world."

The show was shot on-location in places like Japan, Peru, and San Francisco during its filming in 2019, and features tons of famous guests, from chefs to actors. "We were very fortunate to have some really terrific celebrity guests who come on to play characters. Rashida Jones is in a cooking competition where she kind of is a little overconfident about her skills - there are lessons learned. It's fun for everyone."

Michelle continues, sharing that while the show aims to educate kids and families about food in fun ways, the former First Lady's ultimate mission is to do good and raise money for families across the nation who are experiencing food and nutrition insecurities.

"We've got a campaign called 'Pass the Love,' and [we're] working with the organization Partnership For a Healthier America (PHA), where our goal is to feed one million families in this nation. . . This is a time when people are suffering and there are families going hungry. People have lost their jobs, their incomes, their livelihoods, and there are folks going hungry."

After playing a hilarious game of "Drawer Dash" in a separate clip, Ellen shared with Michelle a surprise from Triscuit: the company donated $50,000 to PHA to kickstart the Pass the Love campaign's mission to create food equity in the US.
