Crispy bacon and runny egg yolks may be breakfast staples, but they aren't the stars of Dan Levy's new brunch show. Made with everyday "culinary heroes" in mind, his new HBO Max series The Big Brunch is basically a pancake-lover's dream come true, and I can't decide if I'm more obsessed with the mouth-watering food or the heartwarming message behind the show.
"I created this show for them, the local culinary heroes of America who deserve a spotlight."
Levy, who will host the show, created the series with Boardwalk Pictures to celebrate underrepresented culinary voices by giving chefs from varying backgrounds an opportunity to redefine what "brunch" really means. During every episode, the series will also highlight each chef's individual story and aspirations, giving them all a chance to compete for a "life-altering" prize.
"Everybody has a friend, a family member, or a co-worker that is extraordinary at what they do, they just need a leg up so that their talents can be appreciated on a larger scale," Dan said in a statement, according to Variety. "Thanks to an almost obsessive love of food, I've been lucky enough to come across many of those people in the culinary world - friends working out of cafes or food trucks, revolutionizing the menus at local diners - those special humans who create communities around their cooking, hoping to take their skills to the next level. I created this show for them, the local culinary heroes of America who deserve a spotlight. That, and who doesn't want to watch maple syrup being poured slowly over a golden stack of perfectly cooked, creme brûlée-inspired French toast?" Ahem, creme brûlée-inspired French toast? I'll be requiring a fork and a generous serving of butter when that episode comes on, please.
Auditions for The Big Brunch, which is set to air sometime in 2022, are currently open to US residents over the age of 21, with no specific amount of cooking experience required. So whether you're more of a sweet or savory brunch fan, check out the application form here and maybe send a copy to the head cook at your favorite locally-owned diner - or even that neighbor who always brings the best cinnamon buns to the potluck!
